For the more adventurous types and those who like to stay active and immersed in nature, I can suggest a choice of two itineraries accessible by bicycle:
Lido – Pellestrina – Chioggia: This 25 km-long tour starts at the Lido di Venezia, with its beautiful beaches and world-renowned for the Internationsl Film Festival. We will ride along the Murazzi, ancient levees built for protection of the lagoon, and through Malamocco, once home of the Doge. We will then catch a ferry to cross the first inlet, where the Mose movable dam system is being built, and reach Pellestrina, a pictoresque fishing island between the lagoon and the sea. After riding to the second inlet, we will cross on another ferry to Chioggia, where I strongly recommend a hearty lunch of traditional seafood dishes! From Chioggia, we will then travel back to Venice with the vaporetto, passing through the southern lagoon. Length: 6-8 hours Extra expenses: bicycle rental, ferry tickets, lunch
Sant’Erasmo: This 10km tour will immerse you in the peace and tranquility of this green oasis, off the beaten track of mass tourism. Part of the northern lagoon island complex, the island of Sant’Erasmo has always been the “vegetable garden of Venice” thanks to its fertile soil: most of the produce grown here is still destined to the Mercato di Rialto, the food market of Venice. Finally, the well-earned reward to your excursion will be a delicious lunch in an agritourism restaurant and relax on the nearby beach. Length: 3 hour Extra expenses: bicycle rental, ferry tickets, lunch
